“Flat Tire on the H3” is based on a family camping adventure we had on Oahu a few years back. We were on our second day of living in this VW bus and woke up to the most beautiful sunrise on the beach that was just steps from our campsite. We headed out on our way to do some sight seeing around the island. It was slow going as the bus had a rough time on the hills. As we were heading up one on the H3 highway the steering suddenly became extra difficult and realized we had a blowout. The bus pulled hard to the left and I struggled to get it pulled over. There was no good place to stop on the viaduct and we were at the beginning of it. I got as close to the wall as I could and stopped. I got out and looked all over the bus and realized we did not have a spare tire. I called the guy that rented the bus to us and sent him our location. We waited for about 45 minutes for him to get there with a spare and he started to change it. He ran out to do a few wrench turns before he had to run back behind the bus as cars fly by. I seriously thought to myself this guy is going to die right in front of me changing this tire. Somehow he got it changed, didn’t die a horrible death, and we got off the highway. Needless to say after a dead battery on day one and this on day two, our bus adventure ended prematurely. The day wasn’t all bad as it ended with a killer sunset surf session with my son in Waikiki. It was a super short adventure but one we will for sure never forget.
